The Tugela is Draken’s take on one of the most popular watch genres – the dive watch. With its distinct hour indices inspired by the shapes found in Zulu beadwork, and it’s tapering case mirroring the shape of the Protea flower, there is no other dive watch like it.

The bead-blasted case helps hide scratches, and the sapphire crystal display ensures clarity for the lifetime of the watch.

For the third edition of the Tugela, the bracelet will be tapered from 22mm to 20mm at the clasp. The clasp has also been upgraded.

To get the brightest lume, you need to apply it thick. The indices of the dial have 10 layers of X1 C3 Superluminova – the brightest luminous paint available. We went even further with the lume and added it to the numbers on the date wheel – we think it’s a pretty cool feature!

The 120-click unidirectional bezel has a crisp, satisfying click, with no play. The bezel insert is the same matt finish as the rest of the watch, with luminous markers in the same X1-C3 paint. The knurled crown provides ample grip, and we’ve even added lume to the logo on the tip.

You’ll also get a nylon Zulu strap to match the colour of the bezel. Spare quick release pins are provided for easy attachment.

I love the Sinn tactical watch case like design of the Teluga! The case and dial design is what attracted me to Draken Watches.

The Tegula is very well made and extremely well designed. I love how the bezel and case integrate. The bezel is very easy to grab and turn and lines up perfectly.

The dial and handset is very unique. I love the marker design but just wish they were a little bigger. I would also prefer all steel finish handset. I am not a fan of bead blasting generally unless the metal is hardened. That being said I appreciate the attention to detail. The chapter ring is blasted to match the case. The case back is nicely engraved although the writing could be better. It is these details and the unique dial design and hand set that really set this watch apart.

The Lume is also very good. The use of C3 X1 makes a big difference as it glows brighter and longer than regular C3 which was already good. The large hands have plenty of Lume and glow like crazy! The markers glow well but could be a little bigger. Very good Lume! Better than most!

The bracelet uses solid end links and has a very nice design. I do wish they used screw links over split pins. The clasp is milled steel with many micro adjustments to get the perfect fit. There is a very nice Zulu strap as well-another nice detail.

The knurled and lumed crown and crown guards are another great detail.

The lumed bezel works great as well.

A signed note from the owner is the final nice detail and is appreciated.

I like the NH35a but prefer the Miyota 9015. The 9015 is a cheaper and readily available alternative to the ETA 2824. As an inexpensive movement the NH35 is probably the best choice and is a great and reliable movement.

Overall I think the Teluga is going to be a long time companion and I highly recommend it. I think it is a very good value! The service is first rate!
